Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton (England), the Great-Grandson of composer William Hawes. He took up the trumpet at the age of twelve and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music at sixteen, studying trumpet with Ernest Hall and composition with Gordon Jacob.
He played trumpet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra until 1948, after which he devoted all his energies to composition. As a composer, he stood alongside Benjamin Britten and William Walton.  Arnold wrote prolifically for orchestra and chamber groups. He wrote concertos and sonatas for players he particularly admired, including the Guitar Concerto for Julian Bream
The Divertimento for Wind Trio was written in 1952.
