George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York.
He studied piano and composition whilst working in "Tin Pan Alley" - the centre of New York's popular music publishing business.
He composed "Rhapsody in Blue" in 1924 followed by further successful songs and Broadway musicals.  This led to a period of composing for Hollywood film scores.
Major works include "An American in Paris" - a tone poem for piano and orchestra and
"Porgy and Bess" which Gershwin called his "American Opera".
