Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro. Taught music by his father, Villa Lobos was earning his living playing the 'cello as a cafe musician at an early age.
He travelled in the north-east of Brazil collecting folk music.
He studied at the National Institute of Music in Rio de Janeiro, but retained his personal idiosyncratic style of composition inspired by the ethnic music of Brazil.
Later (1923 - 1930), he worked and studied in Paris.
Choros No.2 was composed in 1924.  It captures the spirit of the joyous improvised music which would be played at a Brazilian wedding.
